Overview

Spencer House Partners LLP (“SHP”) was established in London in 2006 by Lord (Jacob) Rothschild and Jeremy Sillem (Managing Partner). Our purpose is to provide merchant banking services to companies in the financial services industry with a particular focus on asset management businesses. We offer strategic advice and, through our partners and connections, take equity stakes in high quality businesses to which our skills and experience are expected to contribute.

The premise behind our business is the belief that the asset management industry is one of the world’s most dynamic. It has experienced both explosive growth and tremendous challenges. The broadening of liquid asset classes and the development of “alternative” firms to exploit them created a period of extraordinary growth and wealth creation. Subsequent events have largely arrested or reversed these developments and have presented challenges to both newer businesses and longer established firms.

We offer advice to such businesses, their shareholders and those interested in investing in the industry. Such advice can relate to the sale or purchase of a strategic stake or controlling interest, recapitalisation, merger, initial public offering or other strategic transaction. Since formation, we have provided advice on transactions within each of these categories.

As well as providing advice, we are in a position to arrange equity investments in businesses we believe to be attractive. Such investments are made typically when both parties believe that we can make an important contribution to the success and development of the business. That contribution might be through advice on strategy, financing, acquisitions, client identification and introduction, marketing, recruitment, or with the development and execution of a sale strategy. We do not normally seek control positions, preferring to make investments in businesses where we can support an existing management team, often the founders of the business, providing assistance with a new stage of the company’s development.
